Whether you’re renting and want the deposit back or selling and want the best first impression, the order you do things in matters. Here’s the four-week plan.

Book the big pieces first: movers fill up fast at the end of the month.

4 weeks out: book the movers

End-of-month dates go first. In North Carolina, movers who move household goods for pay need a certificate from the NC Utilities Commission, so ask for it before you book.

3 weeks out: get rid of what you won’t move

Every box you don’t move is money saved on the moving truck. Donate what’s usable, then have the rest hauled away in one trip.

2 weeks out: patch and touch up

Nail holes, anchor holes and scuffed walls are the most common deposit deductions. Patch them, then touch up or repaint. Check your lease for the original paint color first.

1 week out: clean the carpets

Carpets need several hours to a day to dry, so do them after the furniture is out but before the final clean, or right after movers leave.

The last day: the move-out clean

Book the move-out clean for after the last box leaves. Inside the oven, fridge and cabinets, baseboards and bathrooms are what landlords check first.

Selling instead of renting?

The same order works for listing photos. Add a house wash and gutter cleaning for curb appeal, and fresh interior paint in neutral colors.

Common questions

What do landlords deduct for most?

Cleaning, wall damage and carpet stains are the most common deductions. This checklist covers all three.

Can one company do several of these?

Often yes. Ask when you request a price; many crews handle cleaning and carpets, or patching and paint, together.
